Magny Cours
It was the French who coined the term grand prix
(big prize) for the first time at Le Mans in 1906.
The winner
was Szisz driving a Renault fitted with new detachable rims
created by Michelin, this allowed him to change tyres in less
than three minutes instead of the normal 15 minutes.
The race
took place over two days, and so that the mechanics could work
under the cars, they dug pits by the side of the road.
Renault, Michelin, grand prix, pits and quick tyre changes are
still very much part of F1`s vocabulary, nearly one hundred
years later.
The French Grand Prix is a very different event today.
Magny
Cours has elegance, as only the French seem to achieve at
sporting events.
In
France, it`s just great wine and good food.
It`s a wonderfully
modern venue with a stylish atmosphere.
The track has long
straights and the fast corners, making this race one of the
fastest and most exciting circuits.
Magny Cours also produces
close racing, for the track surface is so smooth that both
Bridgestone and Michelin tyres are more or less equal.
The
corners are spectacular and opportunities for overtaking on
the Estoril turn are better than normal.
So, you can take in the sights of the Loire valley and of
Vichy, drink some wonderful French wine, enjoy the exquisite
French cuisine and watch an exciting F1 race!
What a way to
start a European Holiday!
